When we lived alone, as a bachelor in the city, we had no tote bags. This was an unthinkable accessory to own. Years later, we settled down, and married into what can only be called an aspirational collection of tote bags. They were everywhere: in closets, in the kitchen, by the front door, inside other bags like a Russian Doll mystery. There were more bags than there were bag-needing items. We were uncomfortable with this.
